About

Sandy and pupsI am a medical writer and editor (30+ years in the making), and decided to add patient advocacy to my experience and resume. After all, family and friends frequently call me for medical advice. Why not make it official! I had not counted on also becoming a caregiver, but now, my 97-year-old mother lives with me. It’s both a blessing and a serious challenge. I still have my work, and I work out of my home office. I still care for two pups–one elderly, the other with new onset seizures. And now mom has joined the family.

Fortunately, my husband helps with tending to mom, but he cannot partake in mom’s personal care and difficult bathroom sessions. Several years ago, I moved into a small, but charming home–with only one bathroom. Although I had planned to add another bathroom eventually, the work is still not done and is becoming more and more remote. Quarters are tight, but cozy. And asepsis is a continuing challenge.

Because I am a writer and enjoy putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard), I decided to start this blog. It’s a way of holding hands with other caregivers and possibly sharing and receiving advice. This is my day, my life–or part of it. I hope readers will join me in laughing or crying and finding solace or solutions. Just know: you are not alone. You are never alone.

  1. Sandy,
It was a pleasure speaking to you this evening. Thank you for reaching out! I will get you the information from my VA advocate concerning the things we discussed and get back to you by the end of the week.
Have a peaceful evening and hang tough! We are stronger and more courageous then we ever thought we were!

    1. Same here, Martha. Come to think of it, I knew a Virginia Kemp. But then there were probably Kemps all over the place in that neck of the woods.
Thank you for the tip concerning the VA. I look forward to getting the info. As for your assessment, you are quite right. We are strong and courageous. What’s more, we are in this together and will help each other through it. Your nursing degree, your experience, and your voice serve you well and will be sure to serve you even better in the future, when you can make the rounds and share your experience with an even greater audience. I am blessed to know you!
